Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and Chhathi Maiya (Mother Shashti), who is believed to be the sister of the Sun.
Chhath Puja spans over four days and is one of the most significant and rigorous festivals, involving strict rituals and fasting to express gratitude to the Sun God for sustaining life on Earth.

Chhath Puja: Significance of the Four-Day Ritual
Day 1 – Nahay Khay: The first day is focused on purification. Devotees take a ritual bath in holy rivers or ponds, usually in the morning, and have a single meal prepared without onion or garlic, marking the beginning of the purification process.
Day 2 – Kharna: Devotees observe a waterless fast from sunrise to sunset. In the evening, they prepare prasad, often kheer (a rice pudding made with jaggery) and chapati, which is shared with family and neighbors. After the evening rituals, devotees break their fast.
Day 3 – Sandhya Arghya: This is the primary day of Chhath Puja. Devotees fast without water and gather by a riverbank or pond at sunset to offer arghya (prayer offerings) to the setting sun. Traditional songs and rituals celebrate the evening as devotees express gratitude for life and energy.
Day 4 – Usha Arghya: The final day begins with early morning prayers to the rising sun, concluding the fast and marking the completion of Chhath Puja.
